What did you all think of our 82 year old man with a normocytic anaemia?
We have established that the patient has an Hb of 82, MCV 89, normal plts and WCC and an unremarkable film. He has normal liver functions tests but his renal function is abnormal, with a urea of 18, and creatinine of 267. He denies any melaena and PR examination is unremarkable. In fact his GP bloods show a gradual drift in his Hb over the last 6 months.
What questions would you ask when you take the patient history? And what tests would you do next?
