Case 32 – the beginning

Welcome to our new case! Another haematology problem that we will need everyone’s expertise to unravel. This week we are dealing with matters of the heart!

A 40 year old man with dilated cardiomyopathy, who is awaiting a heart transplant, has had an LVAD (a mechanical heart pump) placed.
TeamHaem have been contacted as this gentleman is now 1 week post procedure and the cardiac intensive care team have noticed that this patients platelets have been falling.

His blood count is as follows
Hb 98
Plt 30
Wcc 16.01
Neut 13.57
