Case 49 – the beginning

Our case this week focuses around a 27 year old lady who is know to have sickle cell disease.  She attends the joint haematology/obstetric clinic for preconceptual counselling.

As the junior haematology registrar in this clinic, consider how you would approach this case.  What information would be useful to you when counselling the patient?  how would you counsel the patient with regard to the risks associated with pregnancy in sickle cell disease?

What factors in the patients history would affect your management plan?

would you request any investigations following the consultation?

All cases are fictitious to protect patient identity.

TeamHaem are not an expert authority, but rather an educational project.
