Case 62 – part A

This week our aim is to develop a few short cases based on emergencies in haematology.  The case will be mostly aimed at junior doctors and medical students, timing with the transition of juniors in UK to new rotations this week, and the start of a new cohort of foundation doctors.  Obviously everyone is welcome to join in the case, and perhaps share their experiences/tips on managing these patients.

case A

A 40 year old man known to the haematology team attends the day unit for FBC and review.  The nursing staff take the gentlemans blood but whilst waiting for the results he spikes a temperature- 39.4 C

What are your priorities in this situation? How do you make an assessment? What other information would be useful?
